Late work

TOWARDS the end of her life, Suzanne Balkanyi was less mobile. Her tiny studio was full of images and objects from her travels and she worked increasingly from from the objects around her, from photographic references, and from drawings made earlier in her life. The studio filled up to such a point that by the last years, visitors had to navigate little corridors between piles of papers leading to her work table,  her press, her chair and her bed. Although she complained from time to time about how hard it was to keep working, she kept up a remarkably high level of production, creating these last extraordinary and witty pieces.
